The Story of the Knights of St. John: A Science of Heroism

Discover the mystique and courage of the Knights of St. John with the Knights of St. John Dagger, a replica of the order's famous sword. This historical weapon brings you a piece of the glory and heroism of the Middle Ages.

The Height of Heroes: The History of the Knights of Saint John

The Knights Hospitaller, officially known as the "Knights of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem", were founded in Jerusalem during the First Crusade by the Italian monk Gerardo da Sasso to assist pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. His successor, Raymond du Puy, completed the work by creating an armed branch composed of crusading knights.

The Order was also known as the "Knights of Rhodes" and as the "Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta". This order was initially a charitable Order, while the Templars were the first military Order.

With the fall of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1291, the Knights retreated to the island of Rhodes. In 1522, the Turks finally conquered Rhodes, and the Hospitallers retreated to Malta. Here they remained until 1798, when Napoleon occupied Malta and annexed it to the French Republic. This ended the Order's sovereign power.
